MOZA BANCO BRINGS FINANCIAL EDUCATION AND SCHOOL SUPPORT TO THE SIKWAMA COMMUNITY

Moza Banco, in partnership with the Fernando Leite Couto Foundation (FFLC), hosted the literary event “In Conversation with Ana Magaia: Celebrating 100 Years of Noémia de Sousa” on 27 August at 4.00 pm at its headquarters. The initiative celebrated the life, work and legacy of one of the most important voices in Mozambican literature.

Held to mark the centenary of Noémia de Sousa, often celebrated as the “mother of Mozambican poets”, the gathering offered a journey through art, literature and the experiences that shape the human condition, creating space for a conversation about art, culture, dreams, imagination, freedom, engagement and utopia.

The participation of Ana Magaia gave the event a special dimension, owing to her distinguished career and her contribution to Mozambican culture. An actress, producer and professional in theatre, film and television, Ana Magaia has built a career spanning more than four decades, marked by her dedication to the arts and her commitment to promoting Mozambican cultural expression.

During the event, the artist performed a selection of Noémia de Sousa’s poems, specially chosen for the occasion, offering the audience an opportunity to engage with the poet’s work through the voice and interpretation of one of Mozambique’s leading artists. The event also included an open session for comments, questions and readings, allowing the audience to take an active part in the dialogue.

The initiative formed part of Moza Banco’s commitment to supporting and promoting initiatives related to the development of culture and literature, contributing to Mozambique’s socio-cultural enrichment and to the preservation and appreciation of the country’s national cultural heritage.

Social responsibility initiative held as part of the inauguration of the Malhampsene Branch and integrated into the “Sonhar o Amanhã” programme

Moza Banco carried out a social responsibility initiative this Wednesday at Sikwama Primary School in Matola, where it symbolically presented school kits to pupils from the community and held a financial education session focusing on the importance of saving.

The initiative was held as part of the inauguration of the new Malhampsene Branch and reflects the Bank’s commitment to linking its territorial expansion with value creation in the communities where it operates. For Moza Banco, proximity goes beyond providing financial services; it also means supporting people’s aspirations and contributing to the economic and social development of communities.

The initiative forms part of the “Sonhar o Amanhã” programme, launched in 2023 with the aim of bringing essential knowledge and resources to primary school children in different parts of the country. Through this programme, Moza Banco has been distributing kits containing school and educational materials to vulnerable children, as well as organising educational sessions on saving, financial management and sustainability.

On the occasion, Moza Banco Executive Committee Member Sérgio Ribeiro highlighted the importance of investing in children’s development and promoting financial literacy from an early age. “We believe that financial education should start early, because developing financially aware citizens also means contributing to better-prepared families, more resilient communities and a stronger economy,” he said.

The initiative also sought to contribute to school retention, academic achievement and the strengthening of the financial knowledge of the children involved. For the Bank, the delivery of school kits and the sharing of knowledge represent a tangible way of transforming the inauguration of the new branch into an occasion for joint celebration with the community.

Moza Banco has officially inaugurated its Malhampsene Branch in the Municipality of Matola, strengthening its presence in one of the most economically and commercially dynamic areas of Greater Maputo and bringing the total number of business units across the country to 62.

The ceremony, held this Wednesday, was presided over by Julio Parruque, President of the Matola Municipal Council, and attended by members of the Executive Committee, the Bank’s senior management and customers. The event formally presented the investment to the local authorities and community, following the branch’s commencement of operations, further consolidating Moza Banco’s position as the institution with the third-largest banking branch network in Mozambique.

On the occasion, Executive Committee Member Sérgio Ribeiro highlighted the strategic significance of the opening: “Being close to our customers means more than simply providing banking services. It means understanding people’s needs, supporting their projects and creating the conditions for families, entrepreneurs and businesses to turn their ambitions into reality. The Malhampsene Branch embodies precisely this commitment to proximity, trust and value creation within the community.”

The new branch features a customer service area designed to meet the needs of individuals, entrepreneurs and businesses. It forms part of a broader growth strategy that combines the expansion of the physical network with an advanced digital transformation process. The Bank has been investing continuously in improving its digital solutions, with the aim of providing customers with greater convenience, flexibility and security in their day-to-day transactions.

The inauguration comes at a particularly positive time for the institution, which recently announced favourable results for the first half of 2026, further strengthening signs of sustained growth and consolidation in Mozambique’s financial market.

As part of the inauguration, Moza Banco also carried out a social responsibility initiative at Sidwava Primary School, delivering school kits, distributing savings books and conducting a financial literacy session. The initiative forms part of the Sonhar o Amanhã programme, launched in 2023, whose mission is to provide essential knowledge and resources to thousands of vulnerable primary school children across the country, teaching them from an early age the fundamental principles of saving, budgeting and financial management.

Moza Banco and Fundação Dom Cabral hosted a high-level debate this Wednesday in Maputo under the theme “How to Finance Mozambique’s Growth: The Role of the Development Bank and Commercial Banking”, bringing together representatives from the financial, business and academic sectors, as well as development partners, for a strategic discussion on the challenges and opportunities of financing the country’s economic growth.
The event provided an open platform for dialogue on the role of the various stakeholders in mobilising resources for productive investment, highlighting the need for closer coordination between the Government, commercial banks, the future Development Bank, the private sector and international development partners.

In his opening remarks, Professor Carlos Braga shared international experiences on development banks, emphasising that such institutions can play a decisive role in economic transformation when founded on sound governance principles, financial sustainability and complementarity with the existing financial system.
The panel discussion, moderated by Moza Banco’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Henrique Cossa, featured Manuel Soares, João Macaringue, Omar Mithá and Olamide Harrison. The panellists examined the main constraints to financing economic growth in Mozambique and shared perspectives on solutions capable of accelerating investment, productivity and the competitiveness of the national economy.

Throughout the discussion, participants agreed on the importance of strengthening long-term financing mechanisms, supporting private sector development and creating the conditions necessary to transform the country’s economic potential into sustainable and inclusive growth.
On the occasion, Moza Banco and Fundação Dom Cabral also symbolically signed the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions, reinforcing their joint commitment to leadership development, business capacity building and the promotion of initiatives that contribute to Mozambique’s economic growth.

Moza Banco Reaffirms Its Commitment to the Promotion of Mozambican Culture and Intellectual Thought

Written by Crimildo Matola, has been awarded the 8th Fernando Leite Couto Literary Prize. The winner was announced during a ceremony held at the premises of the Fundação Fernando Leite Couto in Maputo.

Dedicated to the literary genre of prose, the 2026 edition brought together five shortlisted works from different parts of the country, demonstrating the vitality of Mozambican literary creation and the emergence of new voices capable of enriching the nation’s cultural heritage through literature.

Established by the Fundação Fernando Leite Couto, with the support of Moza Banco, the Portugal–Mozambique Chamber of Commerce and the Municipality of Óbidos, Portugal, the Prize has established itself as one of the most significant platforms for encouraging literary production in the Portuguese language, contributing to the discovery, recognition and international visibility of Mozambican authors.

On the occasion, Manuel Soares, Chief Executive Officer of Moza Banco, highlighted the role of literature in shaping collective identity and strengthening critical thinking, stressing the importance of continuing to create opportunities for emerging writers to develop and share their talent.

“Literature is more than artistic expression. It is memory, identity and a way of interpreting the world. Through literature, stories are preserved, experiences are recorded, and new perspectives on reality and the future are created. Literary initiative at the Fundação Fernando Leite Couto reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to the holistic development of Mozambican children.

As part of the Children’s celebrations, which mark International Children's Day and Moza Banco recently organised a literary initiative for children at the premises of the Fundação Fernando Leite Couto. Held within the framework of the partnership between the Bank and the Foundation, the event featured a dramatized reading of  by renowned Mozambican author Mia Couto. The programme also included a book-signing session, interactive activities, games and other recreational experiences, providing participating children with an educational, enriching and memorable occasion.
The choice of literature as the central theme of the celebration was deliberate. Moza Banco believes that reading plays a fundamental role in shaping future generations by fostering creativity, critical thinking, imagination and learning skills. By encouraging children to engage with books from an early age, the Bank seeks to nurture a lifelong love of reading as an essential tool for both personal and academic development.

This initiative forms part of Moza Banco’s broader strategy to promote education and capacity building among children and young people.
