Moza Banco and UEM recognise young talent at the Hackathon Moza xLab–UEM

Moza Banco and Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) concluded the first edition of the Hackathon Moza xLab–UEM on 23 October in Maputo. The initiative brought together more than 30 students from different academic backgrounds, including Software Development, Project Management and Finance, to address a real-world challenge within the local economy.

The Hackathon took place on 22 and 23 October at UEM's Innovation Hub, using a small local business in Matola providing recurring services as its case study. Working in 10 teams, students were challenged to design a digital solution to address the specific needs of a small local business, focusing on improving the customer experience, increasing operational efficiency and creating new ways of engaging with customers. The case study was based on real business needs, providing teams with a practical context closely connected to the local economy in which to develop their solutions.

Throughout the two-day event, participants attended introductory sessions on design thinking, agile methodologies and the software development lifecycle. They then developed their prototypes with guidance from mentors from Moza Banco and UEM. The exercise brought together technology, business insight and multidisciplinary teamwork, bridging academic knowledge and practical market challenges. At the end of the event, each team presented its solution in a pitch to a jury comprising representatives from Moza Banco, UEM and partner organisations. The solutions were assessed against a weighted set of evaluation criteria.
The winning team, “Delta Team”, comprising three members, received a prize of 50,000 meticais, presented by UEM's Rector, Professor Manuel Guilherme Júnior, and Moza Banco's Chief Executive Officer, Manuel Soares. All participating teams received certificates of participation signed by both leaders.
At the closing ceremony, Moza Banco's Chief Executive Officer, Manuel Soares, highlighted the significance of this first edition for the partnership between the two institutions.
“Over these two days, we have seen what we believe in: when academia, the financial sector and the real economy come together around practical challenges, we create better conditions for knowledge to be transformed into solutions and for talent to find opportunities to make an impact,” said Manuel Soares.

The Hackathon marks the first concrete initiative under the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Moza Banco and UEM. Following the conclusion of this phase, the students' individual performance will also be taken into consideration, with between five and eight high-potential participants potentially selected for the Talent Development Programme, where they will receive mentoring and take part in real projects at the Bank.

Through this Hackathon, Moza Banco reaffirms its commitment to developing national human capital and promoting open innovation, building closer links between the financial sector and academia, while creating opportunities for young Mozambicans to turn knowledge into practical solutions that address the needs of the economy and the challenges of the future.
